guests... evacuated on the peninsula. what haz >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. an early-morning wake-up call right now hundreds of hotel guests evacuated on the peninsula. what hazmat is doing to get them back to bed. the east coast bracing for another storm. why so many people are worried about this nor'easter. >> and we could see some stormy weather around the bay area. chance of cold showers maybe isolated thunderstorms. we'll have more on that coming up. >> and traffic is moving at the limit right now on 101 through san jose. here's a live sneak peek near the trimble exit. coming up a check of mass transit. >> good morning, everyone. it's thursday, november 8. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00 on the nose now. we begin with some breaking news. a bay area hotel with no vacancy is now completely empty because of a hazmat situation. >> cbs 5's anne makovec joins us from burlingame where hundreds of guest, i would imagine, anne, they are just waiting to go back to sleep.

>> reporter: they were woken up in the middle of the night by an alarm, a lot of them have spent hours in their cars here in the parking lot. i'm at the embassy suites in burlingame on anza boulevard. you can see emergency personnel still here on scene. now, this hotel has been cleared. but they are starting the process of getting people back into their rooms. they are prioritizing people with early-morning flights. the hotel is right by the airport. so several people are trying get out of town. here's how it started according to some of the officials on scene. there was an alarm at 12:30 this morning saying that there was going to be a -- there was a carbon monoxide issue. [ loud background noise ] >> reporter: so officials came in and they were able to evacuate the hotel. they sounded an alarm. they then got on the bull horn and told everybody to evacuate

and it turns out that this was all due to a malfunctioning boiler which emergency crews have been able to isolate and they have been able to ventilate the hotel, as well. we talked to one of the evacuees. >> my two girls, we slept in the car for about an hour so trying to kept warm. and it's the unknown factor is probably the most difficult thing. >> reporter: okay. so again, the danger is over right now. it was just a difficult situation for the hundreds of people. the hotel was almost at capacity. they are now working their way back into the hotel. live in burlingame, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. a nor'easter is moving away from new york and new jersey. now heading up north to new england this morning. the winter storm moved ashore in the same location where superstorm sandy hit last week. there are new power outages in the region and up to 8" of snow in some of the places just what they didn't need. and it's interrupting recovery

efforts, as well. teresa garcia has more from rockaway beach, new york. talk about piling on, right? >> reporter: yes, and frank, a good cold morning to you. just when people here thought they would be getting a break after superstorm sandy, in came the first nor'easter. people were along the shoreline communities pretty concerned that this was going to cause more flooding because we already have the ground so saturated. but indeed it turned into a snow or wind-driven snowstorm more so and actually caused some record snowfalls there. in central park in new york city, four inches. in new jersey, connecticut, up to a foot. here in rockaway beach they had at least 4." and all this snow is causing the clean-up efforts to be that much more difficult. >> high winds and heavy snow whipped the boardwalk in rockaway beach in queens, new york. that's where tom ford lives. he was told to evacuate his sandy-damaged home before the winter storm hit but he is not budging. >> i got too much invested

here. >> reporter: he said he will weather this storm like the last one with a little help. >> share some food the neighbors come back and get some heat from the fire. >> reporter: towns up and down the coast are scrambling to redirect resources from cleaning up to shoring up. belimar, new jersey, is rebuilding sand dunes on the beach and the pumps clearing out floodwaters will keep running around the clock. >> we want to be aggressive protecting our community. >> reporter: meteorologists say the snow is a blessing and curse. it's less likely to contribute to flooding, but the snow is more likely to take down trees meaning more power outages. joe and his family have been without power for 10 days. they got it back yesterday, only to lose it a few hours later when the snow started falling. >> i had a sense we're going to lose power. i just had that feeling. >> reporter: for the millions already without power, the thought of even more nights in

the dark is tough. >> it's exhausting just to exist. >> reporter: an army of power workers is already in the northeast because of sandy. officials say they are working around the clock. and frank, thankfully, a bit of reprieve from mother nature as you can see behind here. the atlantic ocean, we are getting some blue in the sky. so the brunt of the nor'easter just passing finally. but, you know, it has left a lot of snow here. a lot of soaked debris still out on the streets. and that's what folks are hopefully going to get out and clean up over the next couple of days. >> hopefully that sunshine will warm them up a little bit. i know folks in new york and new jersey are resilient. but what's the mood after such a difficult couple of weeks? >> reporter: frank, people are so frustrated that this comes back to back and all the devastation that they have. but really tough community especially here in rockaway beach where we were all last night and through the morning. you see people getting together

some rain. cold front moving through overnight. we have some blustery conditions around the bay area right now some winds gusting to about 35 miles an hour in spots. dry cold front sliding through town but just to our north, the core of the low will work its way down the coastline and you can see some of the showers already associated with that along the northern california coastline. temperatures chilly. you have winds blowing and cool numbers. upper 40s into the north bay valleys, 50s elsewhere. i think by the afternoon what a change from just earlier this week. these temperatures again will be dropping off. we had some 60s and low 70s yesterday. today we struggled to get into the low 60s. so about 13 degrees cooler even in livermore by this afternoon. we'll have more on your weather coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you. outside things are getting busy through the dublin interchange area. headlights that you see there, that's westbound 580 traffic and we just checked the drive

times, 14 minutes now between the altamont pass and pleasanton. word from bart of major delays. this is at the south san francisco station. there are some equipment problems on the tracks so it's in all directions from the south san francisco stop. right now it seems like traffic or bart trains heading into the city if that's where you're heading this morning, those are on time. ace train number one no delay. muni caltrain and ferries good to go so far this morning. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. 5:08. another arrest in the torching of that muni bus. the suspected vandals caught in pictures and video setting the bus on fire after the giants won the world series. the post led to one arrest last week and yesterday, police arrested this man 19-year-old nicholas hudson out of daly city. he will face felony charges including vandalism and arson. police still looking for more suspects. police have arrested a man who says he broke into nancy

pelosi's napa county home. 21-year-old kevin hagan faces charges including burglary and felony vandalism. police say he admitted to break into six homes in the neighborhood near st. helena in the past week. that includes the house minority leader's home where he allegedly stole a watch. investigators do not believe the crime was politically motivated. new this morning, a recall effort against san francisco sheriff could be on the ballot next year. a group of women is expected to announce next week that it plans to try to remove ross mirkarimi from office. the group is encouraged by tuesday's defeat of one of the supervisors who did vote to keep mirkarimi as sheriff. the group would have to collect signatures to put a recall on the ballot. who would get free chicken sandwiches from chik-fil-a for a year? we'll find out. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live at the fast-food restaurant in walnut creek. we know it's not going to be you but but i can see campers. >> reporter: the first 100 are already here. take a look, die-hard chik-fil- a fans have set up a tenth city

taking over the parking lot of that new chik-fil-a. they have come all the way -- one of them came from san jose all for the love of chik-fil-a. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> reporter: chik-fil-a tells me these tents popped up as early as 5:00 yesterday morning and these campers are part of the first 100. that's when a new chik-fil-a opens the first 100 customers get coupons for free chicken sandwiches for a year. one camper just told me he turned this into a family event. >> i do love their sandwiches very much. and i think they're excellent. but i also have my son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren in the tenth over there. and i'm doing it with them. >> reporter: the catch is these 100 campers had to be here for 24 hours. the chik-fil-a made sure they were well fed throughout the

in the right lane before the tunnel. we have major bart delays near the south san francisco station. apparently it's most directions from that south san francisco bart stop. all other lines are on time and ace, muni, caltrain and ferries no delay. in the east bay a live look at the nimitz. everything is fine between hayward and downtown oakland. but also in the oakland hills, southbound 13 has now reopened. they had to close it overnight for a stretch to do some roadwork on broadway terrace and thornhill drive. good to go on both directions of highway 13. they reopened a ramp westbound 92 to northbound 101. things look free and easy along 101 and 280 traveling along the peninsula. back outside here's a live look at one of our silicon valley cameras. this is milpitas coming around the bend westbound 237 still looks great leaving milpitas heading towards san jose. it's nice not to see any fog in the forecast but i guess we have some changes heading our

way. here's lawrence with more on that. >> we have big changes coming much cooler temperatures a hill blustery around the bay area today a cold front moving through overnight but staying dry so far. that will likely change though as we head in toward the middle of the day. hi-def doppler checking it out. can't find any raindrops just yet but as we roll through it will be more likely as the storm system moves in. out the door cool, 40s and 50s. this afternoon chance of showers and an isolated thunderstorm. winds kicking up but the highs what a difference from just a couple of days ago as we're expecting numbers only in the 50s and low 60s. here's your cold front sliding on through. not much with that. it's moved on by. as it approaches the coastline rain picking up especially this afternoon so carry an umbrella. it's going to be scattered showers but computer models picking up on it through the day. clouds continue to roll in and out. we'll see some sunshine in between. by the middle of the day and

unexpected wake-up calls. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it was a carbon monoxide scare isolated to a boiler. the building did just get the "all clear" as you mentioned. people finally getting back in their rooms. i'm sure it's going to be very nice to get back in their beds. they are prioritizing getting people back in as far as people who have flights this morning. the embassy suites on anza boulevard is by sfo. hundreds of people were evacuated just before 1:00 a.m. the fire department got a call around 12:30 this morning and determined there was high levels of carbon monoxide from a boiler malfunctioning on the side of the building. they immediately evacuated hundreds of guests first sounding an alarm and then on a bull horn to tell people to get up and go outside. >> had a good alarm system. there was an emergency that was going on that we needed to evacuate. so we just grabbed what you think of at the time when

you're kind of asleep and head down the stairs so my dog and i came on down. >> reporter: people were sleeping in their cars for about 3 hours before the "all clear" was given by the hazmat team and the health department at about 4 a.m. carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless. so it's lucky that the fire department did figure this out as quickly as they did. now, they also mentioned to us that there was a medical call here at around 6:30 last night. somebody wasn't feeling well. they were taken to the hospital. they don't know if this was connected to this carbon monoxide leak that is all under investigation. but again the "all clear" here at the embassy suites in burlingame. live in burlingame, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. 5:31. that nor'easter that hit the mid-atlantic region is now moving north into new england this morning. we are going to take a live look at -- look at new york! this is on the island of manhattan. and there is snow everywhere. they were supposed to get up to

into far northern california. toward eureka you can see this band moving onshore all associated with an area of low pressure off the coastline that's going to have to slide down the coast before we see those raindrops. it is a cool brisk start to the day. very breezy even windy in spots. 40s and 50 right now. by the afternoon, temperatures will struggle to get into the 60s where yesterday, we had 60s and 70s. a few days ago we were in the 80s. much cooler maybe even snow on the mountaintops. >> you were hitting the beach a few days ago. it's crazy. wacky weather week. as far as traffic goes, no major issues on the roads. we are still dealing with these bart delays. it seems like there's some improvement now down to 15- minute delays out of the south san francisco station. all other bart lines including those heading into san francisco are so far still on time. we just check in with bart. otherwise here's a live look at some of our roads. live look at the golden gate bridge, they reopened more southbound lanes. everything is good now towards

oakland hills are take action after a rash of home burglaries even some robberies there. those who attended a meeting last night don't want their faces shown on tv for fear of being targeted. many shared firsthand accounts of being victimized. >> two men walked down my driveway into my garage and held a gun up at me. i began to scream. and they beat me reputedly over the head with the gun. >> the cash-strapped city is short on police. some residents say they are willing to put their own money towards hiring more police officers or building a substation up in the oakland hymns. new this morning a possible recall effort against san francisco's sheriff. next week a group of women is expected to announce plans to try to remove ross mirkarimi from office. they are encouraged by tuesday's defeat of one of the supervisors who voted to keep mirkarimi as sheriff. a vote on the recall could come next june. it's almost decision time. who will score a year's worth

what could happen if the president and congress don't reach an agreement. ,, jack, you said you wanted a whole new breakfast item. i give you... flap jacks. hmm! yeah...um...the thing is, i don't know if i'm comfortable with people eating my face. how 'bout a loaded breakfast sandwich with country-grilled sausage, bacon, ham, two fried eggs, and melting cheese on toasted sourdough. don't do it. don't eat my face... do not eat my... you ate his face?!

[ laughter ] >> leave it to david letterman, right? >> well, he's pretty funny. he is going to miss the election because that's usually all he talks about. >> lots of jokes there. president obama is busy back at work after winning re- election. >> he and the first family returned to the white house yesterday after tuesday night's victory celebration in chicago. he has a busy few weeks ahead working with republicans and democrats to avoid the "fiscal cliff." if congress does not act during its lame duck session, there will be an automatic tax increase and spending cuts. >> that's the so-called "fiscal cliff." and it's one factor in a big sell-off on wall street. jill schlesinger, editor at large for cbsmoneywatch.com, joins us now. so jill, what caused the selling? >> reporter: well, you know, it was a bit of that "fiscal cliff." but now there's some serious concerns about the eurozone right now. and that was what got investors

kind of freaked out early yesterday morning. dow plunging 313 points or 2.4% to 12,932. s&p down 33 to 1394. nasdaq down 2.5% to 2937. again, that selling started in the premarket yesterday after the european central bank president acknowledged that the debt crisis that dragged down southern european economies is now harming germany's economy. and so as a result, we get a little testy early on in the morning. right now, actually the futures are pointing slightly higher and i'm emphasizing "slightly." >> a lot of people thought it was because of the election. it was like the perfect storm of things going on in europe, as well. what about the "fiscal cliff"? what are the worries there? >> reporter: well, i spoke it a lot of large money managers. these are the people who are running the funds that are inside of your retirement accounts and they said they were very spooked by the tough words from partisan politicians

over the "fiscal cliff." and don't forget, not only are those spending cuts and tax increases set to go into effect in january. but if you're an investor, you have to worry that the combined effects raises your taxes by about $3,700 per taxpayer and could send the u.s. economy back into a recession. so that's why the ratings agency fitch said that unless congress and the president come to an agreement quickly, they risk losing our beautiful aaa rating next year. it's like the debt ceiling. investors are very mistrustful of congress after going through that. i know none of this is new information. oh, it's europe. oh, it's fighting congress. it sort of collided on a day and made a perfect storm. emotions were very raw. if you want to know how all of this is affecting your tax bill, we have an analysis of obama's victory and the "fiscal cliff" on moneywatch.com of the we break it out by how much money you earn. >> all right. we'll have to check that out.

[ laughter ] >> looks like we have some unsettled weather moving into the bay area right now. fairly quiet on our hi-def doppler. but we are expecting that to change throughout the day today. a cold front is swing through overnight. that's ushered in some cool and brisk and breezy conditions now. but there's rainfall in far northern california. you see that cold front moving by? but then look at this. you see the core of that low swinging closer into california. that is going to work its way down the coastline throughout the day today and bring a chance of rain. so grab the umbrella. grab a jacket. it's going to be one of those cool showery days especially as we head in toward the middle of the day and the afternoon and then looks like it could stay wet right in through friday and maybe even into saturday morning. so low pressure is on approach. the cold front is gone by but we are going to see the showers. there's a possibility we could see an isolated thunderstorm too and cold enough we could see some snow over the

mountaintops. so unsettled weather today and tomorrow. computer models picking up on it pretty well as it shows clouds rolling by. then a band. showers moving in through the middle of the day and into the afternoon spreading to san jose. then you will see those pockets of showers on and off which is you typically see as a cold front moves by. that will keep things wet into tomorrow morning. so a couple of days ago record- breaking heat temperatures in the 80s. today we struggle to get into the low 60s in the warmest parts of the bay area. 50s at the coastline and breezy too. so it's going to feel chilly outside. unsettled weather continuing into friday, possibly into early saturday morning. then we dry out. a return to some dry weather through sound and monday, maybe more showers on tuesday, elizabeth. >> mother nature cannot make up her mind. outside right now, we'll take you towards the bay bridge. it's dry so far. so enjoy this morning's commute. no big issues on the bridges including the bay bridge toll plaza. also no metering lights. that's why you see it not much

of a delay yet heading into san francisco. things are starting to pick up though towards the dublin interchange. drive time is up to 20 minutes through the altamont pass and pleasanton. so it's slow and go from 205 from tracy to livermore and vasco road. things closer to the dublin- pleasanton area. things are also improving a bit for bart. earlier they were dealing with major delays. now they are down to 15- to 20- minute delays just out of that south san francisco station. so it's in the pittsburg-bay point and the sfo direction. there was an equipment problem on the tracks. so just a heads up. they are working to clear that now. these are just kind of residual delays. elsewhere, if you are commuting along the peninsula if you have a flight to catch by sfo, the drive on 101 actually doesn't look too bad. this is close to candlestick. 280 is moving at the limit. and a quick look at the south bay where various on- and off- ramps are still blocked off on 880. but otherwise, your drive times

are still moving at the limit in the green. and along the peninsula, similar story on 101, 280 and highway 92. that is a check of your "timesaver traffic." traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. the death penalty phase begins this morning for a contra costa county killer. yesterday, a martinez jury found and a that are burris guilty of murdering two people at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza three years ago. nathan burris admitted killing his ex-girlfriend and a man she was dating, in a jealous rage. he acted as his own attorney and smiled and giggled throughout his trial. 5:50 now. in arizona the man who shot congresswoman gabrielle giffords and killed six others will be sentenced at a. jared lee loughner pleaded guilty in august. he opened fire outside a tucson supermarket last year. giffords has since stepped down from had your house seat while she continues rehab -- from her
